story
fabric is where a garment begins.
we work mostly with natural materials, for their touch, weight and irregularities. we look at how cloth falls on the body, how it gathers, folds and builds volume.

weaving & piecing
weaving and piecing return throughout the collections.
often we begin with a whole piece of cloth, cut it apart, then put it together again, rearranging, joining, weaving and layering. a change in direction, order, thickness or density changes the weight of the cloth and the way it falls.
the process is simple and often intuitive.
cloth, cut apart and put together again.

the same movement is repeated many times. slowly, the hand and the material begin to change what was there.
often, we simply do the same thing over and over.
Our relationship with a handweaving workshop in Hebei has developed over years. For some of the fabrics we use, the work begins with growing and picking cotton, followed by hand spinning, natural dyeing and weaving on traditional looms.
These are specific fabrics within our practice. Other pieces use different constructions and blends; the material of each garment is described on its product page.
In the brown-and-blue Ava, Myra and Lola pieces, strips of organic cotton are joined before the garment is cut. The stripe is built from separate pieces of cloth.
Ava brings hand weaving into the collar. Myra uses pleats to gather volume, while Lola gives the same pieced cloth the shape of a full skirt.
